You always have options in life. One of these options will provide the most desirable outcome, and I like to call that the best path forward.
Even in hopeless situations there is a best path forward. That path may only minimize downside, but if you’ve reasonably weighed your options, you know it’s the best move to make. When things go wrong it’s easy to react impulsively, but that’s rarely the best move.
This applies to good situations too, but usually in terms of picking a great versus even greater option. I find it especially powerful in bad situations, where I’m able to reframe my mindset from hopelessness to action. Even if the best path is to do nothing, I feel assured that I’ve weighed my options and I’m proceeding the best way I can.
When faced with difficult situations, I find it important to discount emotions and take an outside perspective. I’m often surprised with how good of a path forward I find this way: it’s emotional me getting a recommendation from rational me.
No matter what, there’s a best path forward. The next time you get knocked down, think objectively about your options: more often than not there’s a silver lining.
